The Mounds View Mustangs closed out the regular season with a convincing 41-7 win over Park of Cottage Grove on October 19. The victory was the Mustangs' sixth straight win, boosting our record to 7-1, which earned the team a second place finish in the Suburban East conference. In our quest to return to the state championship playoffs at the Metrodome, we will take on the Roseville Raiders (2-6) in the opening game for each team in the Section 2 AAAAA playoffs next Tuesday night, October 25 at Mustang Stadium.

After failing to score in our first two possessions against the Wolfpack, defensive back Chris Severson changed the game's momentum by making a leaping interception just in front of our goal line and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown. Besides giving us a 7-0 lead, the play also ignited our offense. Led by outstanding blocking from the offensive line, we reeled off five touchdowns in our next five possessions.

The first of the five touchdowns took just two plays, when quarterback Mike Kerfeld hit a wide-open Austin Smestad on a 48-yard touchdown pass to give us a 14-0 lead. The next scoring drive followed a great play by outside linebacker Drew Rens. Rens chased down a Park ball carrier who looked like he was headed for a sure touchdown on a fake punt. Instead of a 14-7 game, Rens' tackle prevented a Park touchdown and our defense forced a fumble that was recovered by defensive tackle Matt Wildes, giving us the ball at the Mustang 8. The Mustang offense, in workmanlike fashion, then traveled 92 yards in eight plays. The drive featured a 17-yard run by running back Smestad, a 19-yard run by running back Tyler Hansen, a 21-yard pass from quarterback Mitch Fredrickson to wide receiver Andrew Justin, and a 23-yard run by running back Jeremy Redmond. On 3rd and 9 from the Park 10, wide receiver Quinn Madsen caught a Fredrickson pass just inside the goal line for a touchdown that gave us a 20-0 lead. After outside linebacker Ethan DeCaster recovered another Wolfpack fumble on the Park 37, the Mustangs scored 7 plays later on a 14-yard run by Hansen, making the score 27-0 at the half.

After getting the ball to start the second half, the Mustangs picked up where they left off, taking just two plays to score. On the first play from scrimmage from the Mounds View 47, Redmond ran 43 yards to the Park 10. On the next play, running back T.J. Horn scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to give us a 34-0 lead. The Wolfpack finally broke into the scoring column on its next possession when a Park receiver caught a deep pass and split our defenders for a 63-yard touchdown, making the score 34-7. After kick returner Logan Klaers returned the ensuing kickoff 23 yards into Park territory, the Mustangs mounted their final scoring drive of the night. The Mustang offense took just three plays to score. Running back Jake Thompson carried for 28 and 5 yards, and running back Sola Olateju finished the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run, making the final score 41-7 in favor of the Mustangs.

Besides the turnovers from Severson, Wildes and DeCaster, Mustang defensive back Jon Walker also intercepted a pass to stop a Wolfpack drive. In addition to the touchdown-saving tackle made by Rens, other Mustang defenders made big plays as well. Defensive tackle Ayeir Karnwie-Tuah had a team-leading 10 tackles, including a quarterback sack and a tackle for a loss. Defensive end Kevin Sharpe also had a sack and a tackle for a loss, and outside linebacker Phoenix Thompson defended three passes.

The coaching staff was pleased with the team effort, and felt we played a complete game in all three phases of the game. We were especially impressed by the composure of our players, particularly Phoenix Thompson, who showed great restraint on a second-half play in which Park was assessed three unsportsmanlike conduct penalties totaling 45 yards and two Park players were ejected from the game. Our team recognized that our real season begins next Tuesday night, and an ejection from the last regular season game would disqualify a player from the first section playoff game.

The team will be preparing diligently for our rematch against Roseville next Tuesday night at Mustang Stadium. Although we came away with a 27-7 victory when the teams played at Mounds View's Homecoming on September 23, it was a hard-fought win and Roseville always seems to play especially well in our section playoffs. They are a dangerous team that features a great passing game and some tremendous football players. The coaches and players sincerely thank all Mustang fans for their great support throughout the regular season. However, we are counting on even greater support from Mustang fans to help us reach our goal of returning to the state championship playoffs, and hope that next Tuesday's crowd will be even larger than the great Homecoming crowd that helped lift us to victory over Roseville in week 4.
