The Mounds View Mustangs honored the team's seniors by notching its 5th straight victory with a 28-0 win over the Forest Lake Rangers on senior night at Mustang Stadium on October 14. With a 6-1 record and one regular season game left to play--at Park of Cottage Grove on Wednesday night, October 19--the Mustangs remain on course for a high seed in the Section 4 AAAAA playoffs.

The Mustangs scored the first touchdown of the game on its first possession. The 7-play, 51-yard drive was highlighted by runs of 11 yards by running back Austin Smestad and 16 yards by senior running back Tyler Hansen, who finished the scoring drive with a 10-yard touchdown run. The only other score of the first half came after the Mustang defense stopped Forest Lake on a 4th and 1 on the Mustang 14. The Mustang offense took full advantage of the defense's big play. Mounds View's second touchdown was the product of a balanced attack. The 20-play, 86-yard drive took almost 7 minutes and featured a 20-yard Smestad run, a 13-yard Hansen run, and two 10-yard passes to senior wide receiver Quinn Madsen from senior quarterback Mike Kerfeld. With 28 seconds left in the half, Kerfeld finished the drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to tight end Gabe Dargis, pushing the Mustangs' halftime lead to 14-0.

Despite getting the ball to open the second half, we started by having to dig ourselves out of a hole with a possession that began on the Mustang 1-yard line. After stalling at our own 3, senior punter-wide receiver Andrew Justin had to punt us out of trouble from our own end zone. After the Rangers took possession, they responded with a drive deep into Mustang territory. However, the Mustang defense rose to the occasion when it forced a fumble at the Mounds View 10 that was recovered by senior defensive back Chris Severson. Unfortunately, the Mustangs failed to get a first down and Justin again had to punt from deep in our own end. The Mustang defense proceeded to bend but not break. Forest Lake drove to the Mustang 19, but on 4th and 1, our defense responded the same way it did in the first half--we slammed the door shut and gave the ball back to the offense.

The Mustangs offense again took full advantage of another 4th and 1 stop by the defense. We mounted another long scoring drive that spanned 81 yards in 8 plays, highlighted by Kerfeld passes of 15 yards to Dargis and 31 yards to Madsen, which set up another Hansen rushing touchdown from 20 yards out. The Mustangs did not sit on their 21-0 lead. On our next possession, the Mustang offense responded with our fourth scoring drive of the night, a 7-play, 48-yard drive, which featured passes from quarterback Mitch Fredrickson to Smestad for 22 yards, and to tight end Justin Ortt for a 13-yard touchdown, making the final score Mustangs 28, Rangers 0.

The coaching staff was pleased but not surprised that our seniors contributed so significantly to the victory over Forest Lake. Injured captain and running back Jimmy Jaeger has continued to provide great leadership, and injured running back Ryan Nelson also has provided valuable support to his teammates. Offensive lineman John Lundeen, Jordan Roth, Taylor Fortmeyer, Dan Keeler, Ryan Kienitz, Braxton Kinner and Kirk Nelson sparked a balanced offensive attack by the Mustangs last Friday night. We gained 166 yards on the ground (led by Hansen's 86 rushing yards) and 123 yards in the air (led by Kerfeld's 77 passing yards and Madsen's 56 receiving yards). Senior running back and special teams standout Jake Thompson, as well as running backs Dylan Dodge and Zach Laughlin and wide receiver Jagger Gran, also made important plays on offense to help the Mustangs ice the 28-0 win.

In addition to pitching our second shutout of the season, our defense held the Rangers to just 129 rushing yards and 9 passing yards--less than half of Forest Lake's average offensive output of 280 yards per game over its first six games. The team's defensive effort also was led by many of our seniors, including defensive linemen Ayeir Karnwie-Tuah (3 tackles), Brian LaMere (3 tackles), Kevin Sharpe (3 tackles), Matt Wildes (6 tackles) and Mike Cincotta; linebackers Neal Callinan (4 tackles), Drew Rens (1 tackle and a forced fumble), Phoenix Thompson (8 tackles), Seth Bina (1 tackle), Mike Kubiak (2 tackles) and Mark Rasmussen (1 tackle); and defensive backs T.C. Merickel, Severson (3 tackles and a fumble recovery), Ryan Vijums (5 tackles) and Jon Walker (5 tackles).

This is a short week because of MEA break, and we travel to Park for our last regular season game this Wednesday night, October 19. Although Park's record is 0-7, the team has an explosive offense, ranking second in passing in the Suburban East conference. Park will be gunning for an upset victory at home against us. As always, it is important for the team to remain focused and to execute in every aspect of the game. Also important is the ongoing support from our unbelievable fans. Since there is no school on Thursday, let's encourage all Mustang fans to make the trip to Cottage Grove and give the Mustangs a great send-off to our 2011 regular season. Our goal is a 7-1 record and a number one section seed as we head into the Section 2 AAAAA playoffs next Tuesday, October 25 with a game at Mustang Stadium. See you at Park High School this Wednesday night.
