Down 6-0 to the Bears with about 3 minutes left in the first quarter, the Mustang offense struck quickly, driving 80 yards in four plays. A 61-yard touchdown run by running back Austin Smestad and Alec Tolson's extra point gave us a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, the Mustangs overcame some adversity caused by the Bears. After the Bears stopped the Mustangs inside their own 10, punter Andrew Justin temporarily rescued the team with a 54-yard punt to the Bear 39. White Bear Lake mounted another drive deep into Mustangs territory, and had a first and goal at the Mustang 3. The Mustangs defense, however, again demonstrated its ability to affect the outcome of a game. It not only held, but caused the Bears to go backward, and forced a turnover on downs by stopping White Bear Lake on fourth and goal from the Mustang 5. With just over 3 minutes left in the half, quarterback Mike Kerfeld then led the offense on a 95-yard scoring drive, highlighted by another explosive Smestad run of 56 yards. A 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Gabe Dargis from Kerfeld with just 16 seconds in the half gave the Mustangs a 14-6 lead.
Two plays after White Bear Lake received the opening kickoff of the second half, safety (and running back) Tyler Hansen intercepted a Bears pass and gave the Mustangs offense the ball on its own 44-yard line. The Mustangs then proceeded to drive 56 yards for our third touchdown, highlighted by a 22-yard pass from Kerfeld to wide receiver Quinn Madsen. Smestad's 2-yard touchdown run and Tolson's extra point made the score 21-6. On their next possession, the Bears turned the ball over on downs on the Mounds View 39. This time, the offense took only one play to exploit the opportunity, with Hansen scoring on a 61-yard touchdown run. Hansen's touchdown and Tolson's extra point gave us a 28-6 lead that would stand as the final score of the game.
With a total offensive output of 352 yards (311 rushing and 41 passing), the Mustangs had 103 more yards than White Bear Lake, which managed 249 yards (222 rushing and 27 passing). The offensive line was again excellent, opening huge holes and giving the Mustangs two 100-yard rushers in a game for the first time this season. Smestad finished with 145 yards on 10 carries and Hansen gained 102 yards on 11 carries. The defense also had a great game, giving up only 6 points to a dangerous White Bear Lake offense. Lars Anderson finished with 14 tackles, followed by Matt Wildes and Phoenix Thompson with 11 each, Ryan Vijums with 10, Mick Nelson, Matt Harding and Neal Callinan with 9 each, Kevin Sharpe with 7 and Hansen with 6. Wildes had 3 tackles for a loss in the game.
This Friday night we will be back home at Mustang Stadium for senior night--our last regular season home game--against the Forest Lake Rangers. We will need to be at our best to beat the Rangers, but the coaches are confident that the leadership of our seniors will help bring us a victory.
