Led by explosive touchdown runs of 31 and 79 yards by Tyler Hansen and the continuing dominance of the Mustang defense, the Mounds View Mustangs moved the team's season record to 4-1 with a 21-14 victory over the Stillwater Ponies on September 30 at Mustang Stadium. The win sets up a showdown with the 4-1 White Bear Lake Bears next Friday night at White Bear Lake. At stake for these longtime rivals is an edge in the race for the top seed in Section 2 AAAAA, where there currently is a three-way tie between the Mustangs, the Bears and the Totino-Grace Eagles. Also at stake is sole possession of second place in the Suburban East Conference behind the 5-0 Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders.

Turnovers played a critical role in the first half of the game. Defensive end Mick Nelson gave the Mustangs a great scoring opportunity after recovering a Stillwater fumble at the Stillwater 20. Unfortunately, the Mustangs missed the scoring chance when Stillwater intercepted a Mustangs pass inside the Stillwater 10-yard line. Moments later, however, the Mustangs responded in kind with a diving interception of a deflected pass by defensive back Ryan Vijums at the Stillwater 33. Two plays later, Hansen scored on a 31-yard run around left end, giving the Mustangs a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. In the second quarter, two more great scoring opportunities were wasted by the Mustangs when they fumbled the ball away inside the Stillwater 5 and, after defensive tackle Ayeir Karnwie-Tuah later recovered a bad snap of a punt attempt at the Stillwater 30, a field goal attempt was blocked by the Ponies. The Mustangs defense continued to produce first half turnovers. Hansen intercepted a Stillwater pass at the Mustang 36 and the Mustangs drove to midfield. However, the Ponies then made a big play of their own. A Mustang screen pass was intercepted and returned 45 yards for a Stillwater touchdown, tying the score at 7-7 as the teams headed into halftime.

In the second half, the Mustang offense came out determined to create scoring opportunities of its own and to take advantage of any given to them by the Mustang defense. Led by its offensive line, the Mustangs opened the half with a 9-play, 71-yard drive that was capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by running back Jeremy Redmond. After Stillwater blocked the extra point, the Mustangs took a 13-7 lead midway through the third quarter.

As it did throughout the game, the Mustang defense continued its excellent play and continued to create turnovers. Late in the third quarter, the Ponies mounted their longest scoring drive and had a third down and 10 on the Mounds View 13. This time, defensive back Chris Severson came up with a big play, intercepting a Stillwater pass in the end zone and giving the Mustangs a first down on their own 20. After a gain of one yard, the Mustangs had second down and 9 at their 21 as the third quarter ended with the score still 13-7 in favor of the Mustangs. That changed on the first play of the fourth quarter, when Hansen took a handoff on the right side, cut back to the middle, broke tackles, lost his right shoe but kept his balance, then streaked down the right sideline for a 79-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion on a pass to wide receiver Quinn Madsen from quarterback Mike Kerfeld made the score 21-7. Stillwater managed to answer Hansen's explosive play with an explosive play of its own, scoring on a 43-pass play to cut Mounds View's lead to 21-14. However, after Stillwater drove into Mustang territory late in game, the defense again came up with the big play, stopping the Ponies on fourth and one from the Mounds View 36 to preserve the win.

The coaches were impressed by how well the team responded to the disappointment of losing one of its captains, Jimmy Jaeger, to a hand injury for at least the remainder of the regular season. Instead of worrying about whether the team could still compete without one of its leaders and best players, the Mustangs responded with their best overall game of the season. The offensive line led us to 317 rushing yards and 353 yards of total offense. Gabe Dargis, Tim Hanson, Keith Kubitschek, David Le, John Lundeen, Kirk Nelson, Mick Nelson, Jordan Roth and Paul Sharkey all made important contributions in last Friday night's win over the Ponies.

Likewise, our defense against Stillwater was outstanding. Despite the loss of linebacker Matt Harding to a concussion, our defense responded with another excellent game, giving up just 238 total yards. Ten different defenders had at least four tackles: Lars Anderson (13); Neal Callinan (12); Matt Wildes (10); Brian LaMere (8); Kevin Sharpe (8); Mick Nelson (7); Chris Severson (7); Phoenix Thompson (5); Tyler Hansen (4); and Ryan Vijums (4). Jon Walker knocked down two passes, while Anderson, Callinan and Sharpe each knocked down one pass. Our special teams also contributed to the win, and overcame the loss of our kickoff specialist, T.J. Horn, to a concussion. Kyle Klejewski and Logan Klaers each made a key play following a Stillwater kickoff to ensure a Mustang possession. Although we had three turnovers, the Mustangs did force four Stillwater turnovers in winning the takeaway battle by a 4 to 3 margin. The Mustangs also continued their streak of committing fewer penalties than their opponent; we had 3 penalties for 15 yards, while Stillwater committed 8 penalties for 62 yards.

We look forward to this Friday night's game at White Bear Lake. We have a great rivalry with the Bears, and this year the winner will take sole possession of second place in the Suburban East conference. More important, however, is that the winner likely will have a higher seed in the Section 2 AAAAA playoffs. We challenge Mustang fans to see if we can outnumber the Bears fans at the game, even though the game will be played at White Bear Lake High School. See you on Friday night.
