Our Mounds View Mustangs rolled to a 27-7 Homecoming victory over the Roseville Raiders before a full house at Mustang Stadium on September 23, pushing its season record to 3-1 and a second place tie with Stillwater, Woodbury and White Bear Lake behind undefeated Cretin-Derham Hall in the race for the Suburban East conference title. In what is sure to be a tough game, the Mustangs will square off against the Stillwater Ponies this Friday night at Mustang Stadium.
To the delight of the huge Homecoming crowd, the Mustangs got off to a fast start, scoring on their first two possessions of the game. Following an 11-play, 75-yard drive, running back Jeremy Redmond scored on a one-yard plunge, which gave the Mustangs a 6-0 lead after a missed extra point. Mounds View struck more quickly on the second scoring drive. On the third play of a drive that began at the Mustang 29, wide receiver Quinn Madsen caught a short pass from quarterback Mike Kerfeld and broke free from a group of Raiders tacklers en route to a 54-yard touchdown. That score, which came on Mounds View's longest play of the 2011 season, gave the Mustangs 13-0 lead. The Raiders answered quickly, scoring on a 42-yard pass just before the end of the first quarter. The teams went into halftime with the Mustangs ahead 13-7.
After forcing a Roseville punt following the opening kickoff of the second half and taking over at the Roseville 39, the Mustangs started the second half the way they started the game--with a touchdown on the first possession. A 5-yard touchdown run by running back Austin Smestad made the score 20-7. The Mustangs scored their final touchdown in the fourth quarter after defensive back Chris Severson intercepted a pass on the Raiders 35 and returned it to the 3-yard line. On the next play, Smestad scored his second touchdown of the game, which sealed the 27-7 Homecoming win for the Mustangs.
The game was the most balanced effort of the season for the Mustangs. The offense achieved its highest point total in a game his season as it racked up 285 yards (195 rushing and 90 passing). Quarterback Mike Kerfeld played a nice game and a number of offensive linemen contributed to the victory--including Gabe Dargis, Taylor Fortmeyer, Dan Keeler. Keith Kubitschek, David Le, John Lundeen, Kirk Nelson, Justin Ortt, Jordan Roth and Paul Sharkey. The defense was again stellar, limiting the Raiders to just 7 points and 228 yards (71 rushing and 157 passing). The Raiders were unsuccessful in 12 of their 13 possessions, which included six punts, three interceptions (one by Severson and two by defensive back Jon Walker, who returned them for a total of 55 yards) and one fumble (recovered by defensive end Mick Nelson). In addition to the four turnovers created by the defense, other defensive highlights included a critical quarterback sack by outside linebacker Drew Rens and 14 tackles by inside linebacker Lars Anderson. The coaching staff also was pleased with the special teams, who covered kicks and punts well, and helped set up some nice returns. The Mustangs again played a game with few mistakes, winning the takeaway battle 4-2 and committing only two penalties while the Raiders committed six.
As is usually the case, the key to this week's game against Stillwater also will be avoiding turnovers and penalties. Stillwater traditionally is a tough, hard-nosed team with many skilled football players. This season is no different. We are happy to be playing a team as good as Stillwater at our home field. Our team knows that Mustang Stadium is a special place to play, and that they can rely on a huge crowd to support them. We look forward to seeing you this Friday night.
