With a decisive 17-0 shutout victory on the road against a tough East Ridge Raptors team on September 16, the Mustangs advanced its season record to 2-1. Our defense was especially impressive last Friday night, a performance that gives us a big boost as we prepare for our Homecoming game this Friday night against a perennial rival, the Roseville Raiders.

The Mustangs' first score of the game came after outside linebacker Ethan DeCaster intercepted an East Ridge pass inside Raptors territory and returned it to the East Ridge 30 late in the first quarter. Three successive carries by running back Jeremy Redmond culminated in an 11-yard touchdown run, and the Mustangs took a 7-0 lead with 2;59 left in the first quarter. In the second quarter, after the teams exchanged punts, an explosive 44-yard run by running back Tyler Hansen moved the Mustangs from our own 37 to the East Ridge 19, setting up a 30-yard field goal by kicker Alec Tolson. That gave the Mustangs a 10-0 lead with 6:38 left in the second quarter, a lead we carried into halftime. The Mustangs continued its defensive dominance in the second half. East Ridge's two deepest drives into Mounds View territory ended on two more turnovers forced by the Mustangs. Early in the third quarter, defensive back Chris Severson stripped the ball from an East Ridge ball carrier after a long run, and the forced fumble was recovered by defensive back Ryan Vijums at the Mounds View 30. Near the end of the third quarter, Severson ended another Raptors drive by intercepting a pass at the Mustangs 25 and returning it 36 yards to the East Ridge 39. The three East Ridge turnovers took away whatever momentum the Raptors had in the game. The final Mustangs touchdown was the result of a methodical 58-yard drive late in the fourth quarter that was capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by running back Jimmy Jaeger. Tolson kicked the extra point with 1:33 left in the game, making the final score: Mounds View 17, East Ridge 0.

As indicated by the final score, the Mustangs defense was fantastic, and held the Raptors to 204 yards of total offense (116 rushing and 88 passing), while creating the three turnovers. Besides the turnovers, seven different Mustangs defenders made big plays by registering either a quarterback sack and/or a tackle for loss: linebackers Neal Callinan and Matt Harding; and lineman Ayeir Karnwie-Tuah, Mick Nelson, Kevin Sharpe, Brian LaMere and Matt Wildes. DeCaster led the team in tackles with 9, followed by linebacker Lars Anderson and Sharpe with 8, Wildes with 7, and Callinan with 6. Our defense also held the Raptors to just 4 of 12 third down conversions. The defense was only penalized once in the game. Our offense also was successful at eliminating mistakes. The offense did not turn over the ball, which meant we were 3-0 on takeaways for the game, and the offense only committed one penalty for 5 yards. We also outgained East Ridge by a 276 to 204 margin, rushing for 209 yards on 39 carries and passing for 67 yards on 8 of 19 attempts against a very athletic defense that used complicated schemes. The offense was especially impressive on the last drive late in the fourth quarter that sealed the win. On special teams, T.J. Horn continued to excel by averaging more than 50 yards on his kickoffs, and also contributed to the win as a running back. Tolson continued his flawless placekicking; on the season, he is 2 for 2 on field-goal attempts and 3 for 3 on extra-point attempts.

The coaches encourage the boys to enjoy the Homecoming week festivities, but to make sure they focus on the most important goal: winning the game this Friday night. Roseville is a strong opponent that always plays us tough. After losing its opening game 28-13 to White Bear Lake, the Raiders have won two straight, defeating Park 48-23 on September 9 and Hastings 17-14 last Friday night. We look forward to returning home to Mustangs Stadium. Our crowds are always great, but the Homecoming crowd is even bigger and better than most and brings back many former students, players and families to honor our Mustangs traditions. See you on Friday night.
