In a game that was fundamentally a draw in all statistical categories except turnovers, the Mustangs fell 21-9 to the Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders in our home opener at Mustang Stadium on September 9.

The Mustangs got on the scoreboard first on a 22-yard scoring strike to running back Jimmy Jaeger from quarterback Mike Kerfeld, giving us a 6-0 lead after the extra point attempt failed. The Raiders answered with a 4-yard touchdown run, made the extra point, and took a 7-6 lead to close the first quarter. After trading possessions, the Mustangs again broke into the scoring column when kicker Alec Tolson converted his first varsity field goal attempt. Tolson's 23-yard field goal, which was set up by our longest play of the day--a 42-yard run by Austin Smestad--put the Mustangs ahead 9-7. It looked like the Mustangs would take a 9-7 lead into halftime when we forced the Raiders to punt late in the second quarter. Unfortunately, we failed to run out the clock after regaining possession and instead turned over the ball to the Raiders at our own 13-yard line. That mistake set up a go-ahead touchdown by Cretin with less than a minute left in the half, making the score 14-9 in favor of the Raiders at halftime.

Both defenses continued to dominate play in the second half, and neither team scored in the third quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter, it looked like the Mustangs could retake the lead when we began a sustained drive that started on our own 20 and continued into Raiders territory. However, another Mustangs turnover stopped a scoring drive and led to the Raiders' final touchdown, giving the Raiders the win by the final score of 21-9.

A loss is a loss, but the Mustangs played tough all night and showed they have the ability to compete against--and beat--a team like Cretin-Derham Hall. Despite the 12-point deficit, the Mustangs were competitive in virtually every statistic. Time of possession was almost dead even--we held the ball for 24:01 and the Raiders held it for 23:59. Each team converted 5 of 14 third downs, and the Mustangs were 2 of 2 in fourth down conversions, while limiting the Raiders to 1 of 3. In fact, although total offense was slightly in favor of the Raiders (260 to 237), the Mustangs had more first downs (14 to 13) and more passing yards (167 to 104). While disappointed with the loss, the coaches were very encouraged by how hard the team played. In particular, the defense played an outstanding game. Eleven Mustangs had 4 or more tackles: Lars Anderson (11 tackles); Phoenix Thompson (8); Matt Wildes (7, including a sack); Tyler Hansen, Mick Nelson, Drew Rens, Kevin Sharpe and Ryan Vijums (6 each); Ayeir Karnwie-Tuah (5); and Matt Harding and Chris Severson (4 each).

The coaching staff was proud of how well Mounds View High School staff--guided by athletic director Bob Madison and led by trainer Beth Honomichl and volunteer personnel Dr. Jim Thompson, Dr. Christian Kollar and St. Paul firefighter Janie Thompson--responded to a serious ankle injury to Raiders tight end Reynaldo Hernandez. The game was appropriately delayed to help ensure that all medical precautions were taken before Hernandez was able to be taken by ambulance to a hospital. The coaching staff of Cretin-Derham Hall expressed its sincere appreciation of how professionally Mounds View responded to the injury. We also salute the Mustangs and Raiders fans for treating the lengthy delay to the game with respect and understanding.

This Friday night, the Mustangs go on the road to take on the East Ridge Raptors at their great facility in Woodbury. East Ridge has shown it is a dangerous opponent with many excellent athletes. After losing its opening game to Cretin-Derham Hall 27-0 (in a game that was much closer than the score indicates), the Raptors bounced back last week to defeat Forest Lake 28-10. This week our goals are to sustain drives and play mistake-free football. We ask our loyal fans to come out to East Ridge on Friday night and help cheer us to victory.
