The Mounds View Mustangs began the 2011 season with a victory by defeating the Hastings Raiders 13-6 on September 2 at McNamara Stadium in downtown Hastings. This was an important first win for a young team with 20 new starters on offense and defense.
The Mustangs scored their first touchdown of the game and the season when quarterback Mike Kerfeld connected with wide receiver Andy Justin on a 20-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter. Another Mustangs touchdown midway through the second quarter, on an 11-yard run by running back Jimmy Jaeger, put Mounds View ahead 13-0. Hastings then scored its only points of the game on a deflected touchdown pass with 1:55 left in the first half. The first half and the game ended with the Mustangs up by a 13-6 score.
The coaching staff was generally pleased with the team's performance, but felt that the score should not have been as close as it was. The Mustangs' offense gained 331 yards (229 rushing and 102 passing) and only had to punt once. The defense only yielded 168 yards (58 rushing and 110 passing) to a good football team led by a very good quarterback. Although the Mustangs played hard and well, the team made too many mistakes. We were penalized eight times for 85 yards and committed two turnovers that kept the Hastings offense on the field and kept the Mustangs offense from finishing several drives that should have resulted in touchdowns. Nevertheless, the Mustangs offense moved the ball well and the offensive line, which included Gabe Dargis, Taylor Fortmeyer, Keith Kubitschek, David Le, John Lundeen, Kirk Nelson, Jordan Roth and Paul Sharkey, executed their blocking assignments very well.
Our defense essentially shut down the Hastings ground game, and our defensive line, led by Ayeir Karnwie-Tuah, Brian LaMere, Mick Nelson, Kevin Sharpe and Matt Wildes, put good pressure on the Hastings quarterback throughout the game. That pressure led to a first half interception by defensive back Ryan Vijums and a game-saving interception by defensive back Ethan DeCaster on the Mustang 16-yard-line that ended a Hastings drive with 29 seconds left in the game.
This Friday night we have our home opener at Mustang Stadium against the Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders. As always, the Raiders are a well-coached, excellent football team. Defeating the Raiders will require the Mustangs to be at their best. To that end, we are counting on hundreds and hundreds of noisy Mustangs fans this Friday to encourage this team to play its best football. See you there.
